Forbidden Britain – Cumbria
Technically there are couple of rights of way – footpaths – across the narrowest angles of Flakebridge Wood, not far from Appleby. There is also a footpath running along the wood’s south-west edge.
But most of this extensive woodland is out of bounds.
It is one of the most heavily-keepered woods I have seen in recent years, a kind of throwback to the days of Richard Jefferies’s The Gamekeeper at Home.
The “Private – Keep Out” signs indicate that you are definitely not welcome at all away from the few public rights of way. The bulk of the wood is verboten. Flakebridge’s footpaths feature in a number of walking guides to the Eden Valley of Cumbria.
Pity so much is out of bounds.
